Assistive Technology.

Scenario 1: Child with hearing disability.

Assistive technology to be used: Hearing Loop Technology.

Activity:

Children with hearing disability will be grouped into pairs of two.

Each pair will be assigned with a set of questions on the lesson living and nonliving things.

They will answer the questions after watching a video where each pair will be getting one video each.

They will be using hearing loop technology to get the audio from the video.

One member from each pair can jot down the answers and after 20 minutes every pair will be sharing what they have written to the entire class.

 Utility of Hearing Loop Technology:

  • Students can move freely within the loop space while carrying out the discussions and during the sharing.
  • It's very convenient and comfortable for students as it does not require large head sets.
  • They can access their laptops and phones wirelessly.
  • They don't have to tackle up with embarrassment.

Scenario 2: children with visual disability.

Assistive Technology used: Ultra Cane

Activity:

Students will be assigned individually to write their understanding regarding what is biodegradable and nonbiodegradable things.

An article will be provided in the class for them to read where they will use Ultra Cane for assistance.

After finishing reading and jotting down their understanding, few of them will be asked to share their understandings to the entire class.

Utility:

  • They develop transcription skills.
  • Enhance social skills.
  • Can learn without embarrassment.

Scenario 3: Children with Speaking disability.

Technology used: low tech AAC

Activity:

Students will be asked to introduce themselves to the class. For this they will be expressing themselves with the help of Low Tech AAC.

Utility:

  • To use low tech AAC it does not need batteries or electricity.
  • It aids communication.
  • They can express themselves with hands, other body parts, eye gaze, or a pointer held in the hands or mouth.

ICT as a Communicative Tools

  1. Can you describe some of the difficulties that you have encountered during online learning? Mention some of the communicative tools used by tutors to communicate during the pandemic time? Discuss and share your personal observations, experiences with the use of communicative tools during the pandemic time.
  2. Describe the impact of synchronous learning and Asynchronous learning with appropriate examples.
  3. Provide authentic information(citations/references) in regard to the use of communicative tools in online learning.

  1. During the pandemic time the communicative tools we used for teaching and learning were video conferencing through Zoom meeting, chats (Telegram, Whats App) and Virtual Learning Environment. During that phase the difficulties i tackled up while learning through the use of this communicative tools are as followings;

Firstly, I had great issues regarding  the network connections as I was kicked out of the zoom meeting every now and then due to the poor server. Due to the fluctuation of the network it triggered the flow of my learning where I experienced loss of interest in learning.

Secondly, it was not cost effective at all because in a day we used to have a maximum of two sessions where one session used to take approximately  two hours at a stretch. Due to this factor  the data consumption incurred was very high especially with the use of Zoom Meeting app, youtube and social medias like Teleram, Whatsapp and all. Hence the sustenance of data was very economic.

Thirdly, due to its nature of inflexibility in time it was very difficult to match with the timetable of the online classes as it used to clash with personal works where it makes off the track and loss of focus.

Lastly, it felt very inconvenient as it was like interacting with the  four corners of the walls and was like carrying out a conversation with a stranger. The learning was loveless and there was no presence of monitorization of the teachers.

Hence, even with the use of communicative tools the learning during the pandemic phase was v

2.                  The positive impact of Synchronous learning is its an effective tool of acquisition of information as its a real time face to face interaction. Both the communicators interact at the same time where it acquires an instant reply and the teacher can provide immediate feedback to the students. There is no chance of students getting off track of the lesson where it assists interactive discussion with more learning happening. Whereas the drawbacks of Synchronous learning are that both the teacher and the student need to attend during the time scheduled where flexibility in time is not there which creates inconvenient situations. Students are not thoroughly  monitored whereby they cannot get individual attention. Moreover, there are network issues where the fluctuations of the network deprives the interest of the learners.

In case of Asynchronous, the positive impact is that it has time flexibility where teachers can deliberate or share the information based on his/her convenient time and students can refer to it based on their schedules. It gives ample time for students to review where the opportunity for deeper exploration and understanding of the content is emphasized. Whereas the drawback it faces is it lacks social interaction resulting in misleading concepts due to different interactions. It does not receive an instant reply where students need to wait for response and feedback.

3.                  During online learning the use of communicative tools to deliberate the information were the provision of sources of videos relevant to the content. Teachers circulated educational videos from Ted Talks and all based on the content relevancy. They even shared powerpoint presentations and word documents made by themself for referencing or as handout notes.the informations were even shared through the use of voice recording through Telegram. This enhanced the efficiency of the teaching and learning where the input and the lesson intake was very authentic and progressive.
